PRINCE ALBERT ACCOMMODATION

MIRTEHOF GUEST FARM ESTATE

Overview

A Luxury Karoo Guest Farm in Prince Albert

We offer our guests the opportunity to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Karoo in five-star luxury. Our establishment’s unique location allows visitors spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and a “farm” feel practically in the quaint hamlet of Prince Albert.

The original farmhouse is a national listed building with an almost 360 degree view of the mountains and surrounds. It’s the perfect place from which to admire beautiful sunsets and starry skies in summer, to warm up next to the fire in winter, or to take the perfect photos all year round. Our indigenous and exotic Karoo garden is great for exploring, or to relax in, and it complements the homestead perfectly.

Guests are welcome to help themselves to seasonal fruit from our fruit trees and they will be treated to fresh produce directly from our vegetable garden daily.

Our Rooms

Prince Albert Suite

“More than husband and consort, Albert was everything to Victoria, and Osborne was unthinkable without him.” – Sarah Ferguson

The Prince Albert Suite is our premium flagship room. It occupies the entire, newly built west wing of the farmhouse and has access to its own furnished, private terrace and cool shaded garden. Guests can make use of their elegant private antechamber to receive visitors or to lounge and enjoy the comfort of their air-conditioned suite. This spacious room boasts sustainable reclaimed hardwood floors and antique armoires to store guests’ property and clothing. It also offers a comfortable, extra length, king-size bed, with an antique crystal chandelier adding a royal touch.

In the modern Victorian-style bathroom, a scroll-edged bathtub and “his and hers” basins lend elegance, while heated towel rails, underfloor heating and a walk-in, wet room shower adds a cosy, yet modern feel.

Arcadia

God made a beauteous garden with lovely flowers strown, But one straight, narrow pathway that was not overgrown. And to this beauteous garden He brought mankind to live, And said “To you my children, These lovely flowers I give. Prune ye my vines and fig trees, With care my flowerets tend, But keep the pathway open, Your home is at the end.” – Robert Frost, God’s Garden

Arcadia, the name of a region in Greece, is an idyllic vision of pastoralism and the splendour and harmony of living close to nature.

The Arcadia Room is adjacent to Mirtehof’s kitchen gardens where flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables sustain a buzzing community of insects, birds and small animals. Sit under the arbour and enjoy watching our garden hens searching for grub; or watch the resident geese gorging themselves on fallen figs in the orchard. These gardens lead the eye to green pastures where sheep, ponies and rescued donkeys live out their lives in open grazing fields of clover.

As you enter the Arcadia Room, the values of antiquity will soothe you and give you a sense of serenity—soft pastel tones of the Persian carpet and original Oregan wood ceilings, combined with elements of nature reflected in the curtains and artwork above the King size bed. A dressing table; two comfortable lounge chairs, a coffee station with a bar fridge, wall-mounted satellite television, bedside tables with reading lamps and a luggage rack are featured in the room, as well as built-in wardrobes. The Victorian-style adjacent bathroom has a double vanity, and a spacious shower and a bath, with a full-length mirror.

The Orchid

“Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower” – Albert Camus.

Guests who visit during the lovely months of autumn will enjoy the reverence of nature as the colors of the orchard at Mirtehof are mirrored by the autumn flowers on the curtains in the Orchard Room.

The room is part of the old farmhouse where the century-old “brakdak” ceilings are still visible. The Orchard Room is believed to be the coolest in the entire house due to the clay and reed construction of the old ceilings. Ceiling fans and air conditioning keep the cool air moving and create a comfortable space from which to enjoy the courtyard and its quaint, four-spout fountain.

The room offers a king-size bed and a sitting area with a reading lamp. There is a coffee station with a kitchen basin, a bar fridge, a television set with DSTV, a ceiling fan and air conditioner, underfloor heating and Persian carpets.

The king-size bed and the beautifully restored Victorian-style black and white bathroom exude luxury and opulence feeling. The bedroom has underfloor heating, a shower and an antique Victorian bath as well as a double vanity. The room has access to its own terrace and boasts calm garden views.

Bonnie & Clyde

“A dog may be man’s best friend… But the horse wrote history.” ~ Author Unknown

These two separate cottages pay homage to the especially beloved ponies on the farm, which is why they are idyllically situated nearest to the pastures – with a view overlooking our cherished animals.

Guests will experience the romance of farm life at this central location on the estate; in luxurious self-catering units; including a king-sized bed, television, air-conditioning and beautiful bespoke furnishings.
