Things to do on the Swartberg Circle Route
De Rust Activities
De Rust is best known for the beautiful Meiringspoort pass — the gateway that connects the Great Karoo & Klein Karoo. Leisurely winding its way through towering rock formations, the pass follows a natural gorge along the Groot River, cutting its way through the magnificent Swartberg Mountain range. Plenty of scenic spots give you the chance to stop and marvel at the extraordinary beauty of the poort and its towering rock walls, while a short hike up to the waterfall gives one a bird’s-eye view of the incredible scenery.
Soaring cliff walls with spectacular rock formations line the 25km tarred road which leads along the floor of the gorge, crossing the “Groot River” 25 times. This is a gateway between the Klein & Great Karoo. A beautiful waterfall is nestled in the poort, easy walking distance from the road.
De Rustica Olive Estate
De Rustica Olive Estate consistently produces award winning extra virgin olive oil of the highest quality. The estate is passionate about its range of olive oils, and all are blended to perfection to create a top quality range to suit all tastes.
Doornkraal Farm & Padstal
At Doornkraal, enfolded by the foothills of the Swartberge, we’ve been making wine since the late 1800’s. This is what the farm has become famous for, but we also cultivate lucern, vegetable seed and pastures for sheep, cattle, pigs and horses.
Klapperbos Farm Stall
If you want to give back to the community, pop into the Klapperbos Farm Stall in De Rust. Try one of Freda Schoeman’s WOW products (Werk op die Werf) which are produced by local farm workers.
