“DIE HEL” – FONTEINPLAAS GUEST FARM

Gamkaskloof is approximately 100 kilometers from Oudtshoorn and 60 kilometers from Prince Albert. Gamkaskloof or “Die Hel” as it has become known, is a hidden valley, deep in the heart of the formidable Swartberg Mountain Range. The fertile valley runs in an east-west direction and is approximately 20 km long and 600 meters wide. The Kloof gets its name from the Khoisan word for Lion. The Valley features the Gamka River, camp sites, picnic sites, several historic houses and outbuildings, a School, a Cemetery, and old Norse Watermill a landing strip and a curious history. For many years the only access to Die Hel was a steep donkey trail called “Die Leer” (The Ladder).
At Fonteinplaas you will find Pieter (5th generation) and his wife Marinette, with their 2 kids Mia and Beon. Fonteinplaas has been in the family for 6 generations from 1841.
Fonteinplaas offers visitors overnight facilities in 4 farmhouses as well as a Safari Camp and Campsite.

Meals are served in Ouma Sannie se Restaurant our fully licensed restaurant that specializes in traditional Gamkaskloof meals. We also cater for functions and weddings.

  • Safari Camp (sleeps 8 in 4 seperate houses), a big shared kitchen and living area, outside braai and shared ablution facility.
  • Campsite  (10 camping sites), has hot water, 3 showers and 3 toilets. There is no electricity.

Accommodation is based on self-catering, but bookings can be done in advance for dinner and breakfast.

“Ouma Sannie se restaurant en winkel”

Meals are served in Ouma Sannie se Restaurant our fully licensed restaurant that specializes in traditional Gamkaskloof meals. We also cater for functions and weddings.

The kitchen operates from 07h00-10h00 – for breakfast. Dinner and Lunch will be provided on request of guests with a 12 hour notice.

At “Ouma Sannie se winkel” you can get anything from firewood, witblits, cold beer and cold drinks, to a variety of Gamkaskloof curios and organically grown fruit, both fresh (in season) as well as preserves. And the latest specialty, Aloe Verox jam!  Here you can chat and listen to Pieter and Marinette and relive the rich history of the Kloof, illustrated by various photo albums, books, magazine articles and of course the Kloof itself.

We cater for Weddings, Baptisms or any kind of function you can think of at Fonteinplaas (Die Hel).

You will have a mind blowing-experience in the middle of the Swartberg Mountains even if you only have a limited budget.

CELEBRATIO PEMEGRANATE FARM

The farm Celebratio, situated between Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp in the Little Karoo, is owned by a third-generation Meyer who refused to take “no” for an answer when experts said the land was not suitable for the cultivation of any crops.

Today Celebratio successfully grows and exports pomegranates.

 

Gerhard’s cherished childhood memories on the farm sparked him to create guest cottages on Celebratio and to restore the manor house to enable families to experience farm life and the unique starlit nights of the Little Karoo.

We have the following self catering accommodation options available:

Mannie & Marie (Old Farmhouse)
The old farmhouse has been beautifully restored providing spacious accommodation for a group of friends or family. The kitchen still boasts the original coal stove, although a gas stove has been installed for guests’ convenience.The patio (stoep) overlooks a pool and is perfect for watching the sun set over the pomegranate orchard…or light a fire and enjoy a perfect braai or outside dinner with friends.

Sias (cottage)
The cottage sleeps 4. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (of which one is en-suite). There’s also a separate guest toilet. Bedroom one (en-suite) has a queen-sized bed while bedroom 2 has two ¾ beds. It has an open plan living area and kitchen containing all the essentials including a stove, fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster.

DSTV is available at an additional charge and must be booked prior to your arrival. The unit has a private braai and utensils are provided.

The cottage overlooks a swimming pool and the old farmhouse.

Lilly (cottage)

Group Accommodation
We can provide group accommodation (dormitory style) for up to 100 people in 7 dormitory-styled bedrooms. Each building has sufficient and clean bathrooms catering for males and females. Adjacent to the dormitories you’ll find a large dining room and an industrial kitchen. There’s also an outside braai area.

SWARTBERG PASS COTTAGES

WHERE TO FIND THEM:
Swartberg Pass Cottages are on the R308, centrally located between Oudtshoorn, Prince Albert, Calitzdorp and Gamkaskloof. They are only a 30-minute drive from Oudtshoorn and 10 minutes from the Cango Caves.

THE COTTAGES:
These two cottages, with their stunning 360° views of the Swartberg Mountains, can both sleep six guests. Each has two en-suite bedrooms and a kitchen with a stove, oven, toaster, fridge-freezer and tea/coffee making facilities. Both cottages have a built-in braai area with beautiful views, and braai packs are available on request. Pets are also welcome!

TASTY MEALS PLUS AN ADVENTURE:
Dig into a spread of traditional South African dishes at Kobus se Gat (located on the premises and open 09:00 – 17:00). Keen to explore? Join them on a guided Swartberg tour and add some adventure with a downhill mountain bike ride back to the restaurant. E-bikes rentals are also available.

Kammanassie Farmstay is a charming self-catering home set on a farm located 40 km from Oudtshoorn.

The house has a long foyer with a sitting area that connects to a dining room seating 8 people.

The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, stove, microwave, toaster and kettle. A coffee station with crockery is also available.

The spacious living room (with a heater and cosy blankets) walks out onto a large veranda with beautiful views and a comfortable lounge set, providing a lovely outdoor living area.

Room 1 walks out onto the back veranda and has a double bed, wardrobe, heater and hot water bottles for the cold winter months. The en-suite bathroom has a bath, shower, basin and toilet (toilet paper provided).

Room 2 walks out onto the back veranda and has 2 single beds, a wardrobe, heater and hot water bottles. The en-suite bathroom has a shower, basin and toilet (toilet paper provided).

Outdoor braai facilities are also available.

SEPARATE ROOM

This large room, fitted with a double bed and stack beds, has a wardrobe, heater and separate bathroom with a shower, basin and toilet (toilet paper provided).

Guests have access to a garage on the premises for safe parking.
