Evidence exits that the people of Ancient Egypt traded in various ostrich products, with wall murals depicting triumphant Pharaohs claiming Ostriches from the conquered nations. Some of the most valued items were Ostrich feathers.

ACTIVITIES:

GIRAFFE EXPERIENCE:
Our two tall friends Shorty & Sheila’s story may have had a sad start, but it certainly has a happy ending. These two beautiful creatures were rescued after Shorty’s mother was injured and Sheila’s mother was unable to produce milk due a serious drought.

Though Shorty and Sheila are free to re-join the Chandelier giraffe herd whenever they like, they love to stay close to the restaurant where guests shower them with attention. Get some lovely photos while bottle feeding these two “tall babies” or buy some pellets from the curio shop throughout the day and feed Shorty & Sheila these delicious treats by hand.

BUFFALO EXPERIENCE:
Chandelier’s Buffalo Experience provides a wonderful opportunity to learn more about one of South Africa’s Big 5, the once endangered Cape buffalo. An easy walk or short drive takes guests to the buffalo breeding herd where you can get incredible close-ups accompanied by trained guides or from behind a secure electric fence.

Females give birth all year round, so whenever you choose to visit, you’ll be fortunate enough to spot some baby Cape buffaloes.

OSTRICH FARM TOURS:
Ostriches are still one South Africa’s most popular attractions and at Chandelier we’ve made sure your ostrich farm tour is a truly memorable experience. Follow our professional guides on an easy walk through the farm while learning more about these fascinating flightless birds.

See the breeding ostriches with their chicks and feed these big birds by hand.

SUNDOWNER BUSH DINNER:
Chandelier’s sundowner bush dinner is an extraordinary feast for the senses. Experience an authentic African barbecue out in the veld with the most amazing views of the surrounding landscape.

Guests are escorted by open land rovers high up in the mountains where they are treated to a traditional South African braai (BBQ), while watching the sunset over the magnificent Swartberg Mountains.

The 3-course dinner includes a variety of traditional South African specialities including delectable cuts of kudu, ostrich and springbuck masterfully prepared over a wood-fired grill. Dinner is followed up by guided stargazing, a breathtaking experience as the Klein Karoo’s brilliant night skies have virtually no light pollution.

Last but certainly not least, we embark on a night game drive guided by spotlights to view the bustling nightlife and spot some of the more elusive nocturnal creatures. After an unforgettable day we send our guests off to a comfortable night’s sleep in our luxurious tented chalets.

KHOI-SAN TRAIL:
The Khoi-San mastered the art of surviving the harsh conditions of this arid landscape and their story is fascinating. The rugged semi-dessert region of the Klein Karoo may come across as desolate and barren, but these indigenous people cultivated an extraordinary relationship with the land allowing them to exist in harmony with this fiercely challenging environment.

Guests are taken on a short game drive to get a better idea of the Khoi-San’s landscape, before visiting a traditional hut to meet their Khoi-San guide, Njoem. Njoem will lead you on this unique experience as he shares more about his people’s culture, traditions and remarkable way of life.

This one-of-a-kind tour is highly recommended and takes about 1h 15min.
